Journeytech in Partnership with Linde Gas: Winning the War Against Driver Fatigue

February 4, 2020

9:00 pm to 7:00 am. Remember this block of time as according to the report by the Metro Manila Accident Reporting and Analysis System (MMARAS) the rate of fatal accidents almost triple during this time.

There are a host of factors that can explain why that most accidents happen between 9:00 pm to 7:00 am, but the most glaring reason is that those driving at this time experience some level of sleepiness. In general, drivers are not the best judge of their own levels of fatigue. When sleep sets in, it is usually insidious, and the drivers only realizes they are asleep after the sound of a front-end collision.

Given this information and that heavy-duty trucks are involved in the 2nd most fatal vehicular accidents (MMARAS), Linde Gas has decided to be proactive with their fleet and get involved in making the Philippine roads a little safer. Linde Gas, the leader in industrial gases, has partnered with Journeytech, an IT company that focuses on providing business solution to the transportation sector, to equip their fleet with the latest technology in driver fatigue prevention. The Care Drive System powered by KITAKO real-time viewing, a combination of a fatigue camera along with a vibration pad, was installed on all one hundred five of their units.

So how do this state-of-the-art system work together to prevent fatigue related vehicular accidents? It all starts and is anchored by the fatigue camera. The camera detects the size of the driver’s pupil by emitting a harmless and invisible infrared ray therefore determining if the driver is about to enter sleep or is distracted.

If the camera determines that the driver is about to fall asleep or is distracted, the next step is to send out a signal to the alert devices. There are two on-board alerts that work simultaneously, one from the camera sending a voice message “Keep your eyes on the road”, and the other is a jolting shake to the driver’s seat by the installed vibration pad. Combining both an audio and tactile alert is guaranteed to jolt awake even the most fatigued driver.

The last safety alert of the Care Drive System is a video alert that is sent by the camera to the fleet manager at the office. Through this the fleet manager can be updated in real time on the condition of the driver, and advice the driver to rest depending on their assessment of the situation.

Through the Care Drive System, Linde Gas has effectively increased the safety of their drivers by significantly reducing the risk of fatigue related vehicular accidents. To top it off, a decrease in accidents leads to more up time of drivers and trucks resulting to an increase in productivity and profitability of their fleet.

“As a company (Linde Gas), our goal is to deliver the highest levels of HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) performance by having a strong HSE culture. This always requires us to exhibit behaviours that place the highest value on avoiding harm to people, the environment and the communities. Through the Care Drive System, we live by this goal and ensure [sic] that all our drivers go home to their families safe.”
